Edward Larrabee Barnes would be celebrating his 100th birthday this month. This Barnes building, located at 121 S Main Street in Providence, RI was originally designed for the Old Stone Corporation. Today the commercial space is home to Hemenway's Restaurant and the remainder is increasingly used by various departments of Brown University. by Christian Scully When Christine Kelly, AIA, of Crafted Architecture out of Alexandria, VA asked me to photograph a new summer home she designed just off of Ocean Drive in Newport, I was excited to say the least. If there are two things for which Newport is known, visited and more-than-likely envied, those would be its architecture, often overly-extravegent yet impressive 19th century mansions and homes, and its coastal landscape, a winding edge of rocky cliffs and inlets offering beautiful Atlantic views. [There are, of course, many other wonderful things Newport has to offer.] On a clear blue September day I met the architect at the home and after a quick survey we began shooting. The weather obliged as the light slowly navigated around the property. With an abundance of lines, angles and depth in this design, there seemed to be an eye-catching composition every way I turned! Choosing key elements to highlight and tell the story of this home was going to be the day's challenge. View some of those elements in the selection of images below. Capturing Spaces: Furniture by Carnevale Studio for Faust at the Dean Hotel in Providence, RIĀ6/6/2014 by Christian Scully The new Dean Hotel in Providence, RI brings hip Brooklyn culture to what Architectural Digest named the country's best small city. The creative visionaries at ASH NYC took a property with a rather dark and dingy history, and turned it into a boutique hotel meets social hub. In the main hotel, 52 beautifully designed guest rooms, a cocktail bar, and at night a karaoke lounge. In the adjoining space, Faust, a Bavarian beer hall serving craft beer, an appetizing menu, and the perfect atmosphere for a casual night out. Jessica Carnevale, a Rhode Island School of Design graduate and successful designer behind the innovative "Stretch" collection of chairs, was commissioned to design the furniture for Faust, and did an incredible job. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph the interiors and furniture for Carnevale Studio.
